A recent study has uncovered that a ketogenic diet, which emphasizes low carbohydrates and high healthy fats, may help to improve menstrual health in obese women.
The relationship between obesity and menstrual health has been a topic of concern for many years. Women who are obese often face challenges like irregular periods, hormonal imbalances, and higher rates of fertility issues.
By addressing the metabolic issues associated with obesity, this diet has the potential to regulate menstrual cycles, offering a new, natural approach to managing these common health challenges.
A study published in PLOS ONE examined the effects of a ketogenic diet (KD) versus a low-fat diet (LFD) and highlighted the distinct advantages of ketosis for improving menstrual cycles in overweight and obese pre-menopausal women.1
Approximately 40 participants, aged 28 to 45 with a BMI of 30 or greater, were enrolled in the 16-week trial. The women were randomly assigned to follow either a well-formulated ketogenic diet or a balanced, low-fat diet. Throughout the study, researchers assessed changes in menstrual cycle frequency, pain, and overall well-being using a combination of self-reported questionnaires and medical evaluations.
Key improvements were observed in menstrual health for participants on the ketogenic diet. Many women experienced more regular menstrual cycles and a reduction in period-related pain. These benefits were coupled with significant hormonal changes, including improved insulin sensitivity, which is crucial for women with obesity.
The ketogenic diet also contributed to weight loss and decreased fat mass, resulting in better overall metabolic health, as reflected by improvements in blood glucose and cholesterol levels. These findings suggest that the diet may play a role in regulating menstrual cycles through both hormonal and metabolic pathways.
While further research is needed to fully understand the long-term effects and benefits, these findings offer hope for women seeking a natural, effective approach to managing their menstrual health and metabolic challenges.
